The wait is finally over. In a landmark event, Apple has officially unveiled its new smartphone family, confirming the arrival of the iPhone 17 and the show-stopping iPhone 17 Air. This year’s launch signals a major strategic pivot, as the company replaced the familiar ‘Plus’ model with the new ‘Air’ variant. Consequently, the Air prioritizes a stunningly thin and light design. Both new models, however, bring huge upgrades, including ProMotion displays and a massive leap in camera technology.
Apple announced the two models to a global audience, and they represent a clear distinction in the non-pro lineup. For instance, the iPhone 17 is the premium all-rounder, while the iPhone 17 Air carves out a new niche for design lovers. Apple will open pre-orders for both devices this Friday, September 12. Following that, the official in-store release date is September 19.
The iPhone 17: A New Standard of Excellence
As a powerful and refined successor, the iPhone 17 establishes a new baseline for the entire lineup. It sports a vibrant 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display. Moreover, for the first time, this standard model features 120Hz ProMotion technology, which provides incredibly smooth scrolling and responsiveness. A more durable Ceramic Shield 2 also protects the screen. In fact, Apple claims it offers much better scratch and crack resistance.
Under the hood, the new A19 chip powers the iPhone 17. It has a 6-core CPU and a 5-core GPU built on a 3nm process. This new silicon easily handles demanding tasks and the advanced camera system. The rear camera, in particular, saw a huge upgrade. It now features a dual-camera setup where both the main and ultrawide lenses are 48MP Fusion sensors. As a result, this brings a big boost in detail and adds a new 2x optical-quality telephoto option.
The iPhone 17 Air: A Marvel of Engineering
Without a doubt, the iPhone 17 Air was the star of the event. For this device, Apple revived the beloved “Air” name. It is almost impossibly thin, measuring just 5.6mm. The company crafted it from a Grade 5 titanium frame and also used Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and back. Therefore, it is not only the thinnest iPhone ever but also one of the most durable. Despite its size, it boasts a large 6.5-inch ProMotion display, making it immersive yet featherlight at only 165 grams.
To power this slim device, Apple equipped the iPhone Air with the powerful A19 Pro chip. This is the same class of processor found in the Pro models. Consequently, it ensures MacBook-level performance for gaming and professional apps. The camera system has a single, advanced 48MP Fusion main camera that cleverly provides multiple zoom levels. In short, Apple is proving that “thin” no longer requires a major performance sacrifice.
A Shared Vision for the Future
Although different, the iPhone 17 and 17 Air share several key upgrades. For example, both models now start at a more generous 256GB of storage, doubling the previous base capacity. A groundbreaking 18MP Center Stage front camera is another shared feature. Its unique square sensor lets users take landscape selfies without rotating the phone. In addition, it uses AI to perfectly frame group shots.
Connectivity also gets a future-proof boost. The new N1 wireless chip brings Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0 support to both devices. Furthermore, the entire iPhone 17 family will ship with iOS 26.
